BEWARE INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND!

If you drive a fair amount each day, you may have noticed an elevated police presence on our roads. The Texas Department of Public Safety says that State Troopers have increased the number of patrols on the roads beginning today and running through the end of the holiday weekend on Monday.

This increased presence is designed to curtail motorists “… who disregard traffic laws, including impaired drivers, speeders, and safety belt violators,” officials at the Texas Department of Public Safety said. The increase coincides with the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, with the goal of eliminating preventable drunk driving deaths.

Notably, officers are looking for drunk drivers. The Labor Day holiday is traditionally associated with end-of-summer celebrations and other festivities that for many involve alcohol. Often times these drivers will be in a hurry to get somewhere and will jump behind the wheel while still inebriated.

This strategy has worked well in the past. Last year, DPS Troopers arrested nearly 500 people for DWI, as well as made 278 fugitive and 224 felony arrests. Additionally, officers wrote over 8,500 speeding citations, and over 1,000 more for seatbelts or child safety seats.

Safety Tips for the Weekend

If you are planning on enjoying your holiday weekend, either on a vacation or some other form of celebration, it is important to follow these few safety tips:

  • Do not drink and drive (not only is it extremely dangerous, but you will likely be arrested)
  • Avoid distractions
  • Avoid any driver who looks like they may be distracted or intoxicated as much as possible
  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Have a designated driver or alternative mode of transportation if you are enjoying alcohol
